Dermal Fillers

A Guide to Dermal Fillers

HA filler refers to hyaluronic acid-based fillers, often called ‘dermal fillers’. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body that contributes to skin hydration, volume, and elasticity. HA fillers are composed of a gel-like substance containing synthetic hyaluronic acid, used to restore volume, add contour, and diminish facial lines and wrinkles. These fillers are injected into specific areas of the face to replenish lost volume, soften lines, and enhance facial contours. HA fillers are versatile and can address various concerns, including nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lip augmentation, cheek augmentation, and under-eye hollows.   Many people are aware that fillers can be used to enhance the lips, sculpt the jawline and ‘fill’ lines, however there are many advanced ways they can be used to enhance your natural appearance, all available at Renavé Aesthetics Clinic, Retford.

How does filler treatment work?

The hyaluronic acid gel filler physically adds volume to the area as well as attracting water to hydrate the tissues. There are many different types of filler available and the most suitable one will be chosen to treat the specific concern or part of the face. What can fillers be used to treat?

Dermal fillers can be used for many different things to achieve subtle yet impactful results. Examples of how they can be used include:

  • Non-surgical rhinoplasty to lift the tip, smooth out humps and improve the side profile of the nose
  • Added volume to the cheeks and lips
  • Softening of lines and wrinkles
  • Blending of shadows and hollows such as the temples, nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Adding definition such as along the jawline, projection to the chin or to achieve more defined cheek bones
  • ‘Beautification’ – enhancing natural features
  • Improvement of under eye dark hollows

What happens during a filler appointment?

To begin with, photos will be taken for your clinical records. Next, the skin will be numbed for around 15 minutes using a cream. It is then disinfected before treatment is started. The filler is injected using either a needle or a blunt tipped tube called a cannula, depending on the area being treated and the technique being used. Once the filler has been placed, the area may be massaged using a healing gel before you get to see your results!

How soon before I see the results from filler?

Results are instant but generally the final result can be seen around 4 weeks post treatment when the swelling has fully settled.

How long do filler treatment results last?

Results will last between 6 and 24 months depending on the area being treated and the product used. In some cases, filler has been known to last for many years longer than this however most people require annual maintenance or ‘top up’ treatments. Generally, repeated treatments in an area reduce the amount of product needed in the future.

Who can have filler treatment?

HA filler injections are a safe and suitable treatment for most people. It is not suitable for those who are pregnant or nursing. Please book a consultation to discuss suitability further.

What should I do after filler treatment?

  • Do avoid exposure to UV and getting too hot for 48 hours after treatment, for example strenuous exercise, drinking alcohol, hot weather, sun beds, sauna, steam room. This is because heat causes increased blood flow which might cause increased swelling, discomfort and bruising. It also increases your risk of infection.
  • You can keep the area cool with a cold compress, but do not press hard or apply ice as this can cause an injury.
  • Don’t have facial massages, facial electric stimulation, dermaroller, semi-permanent makeup, laser treatments, or microdermabrasion for 2 weeks after your treatment.
  • Don’t apply makeup or have a spray tan until 24 hours after treatment. This is to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Do not touch your face in the areas injected until the day after treatment to reduce the risk of reaction and infection.
  • For 48 hours, don’t apply pressure when cleansing your face. Use gentle strokes away from the eyes.
  • Don’t wear tight caps/garments in the area that has been injected.
  • Do not use retinol, acids or other vitamin A products on the skin for 48 hours.

Are filler injections safe?

Although there are risks associated with all treatments, overall this is considered a safe treatment with few reported adverse reactions. It is very important to book a consultation to discuss all possible risks with the clinician prior to treatment.

More common risks: swelling, bruising, redness, bleeding, bumps, tenderness at injection site

There are other risks to consider depending on where is being treated.

What should I expect after filler treatment?

Due to anaesthetic in the gel, you may feel numbness or tingling immediately after the procedure, and have some moderate swelling, redness, bruising and tenderness over the areas treated. Some people experience a dull ache, and tenderness over the treated areas which usually subsides between 48-72 hours. Mild, non-painful swelling may last for up to 4 weeks in most cases.
